EDWARD MCKNIGHT KAUFFER (1890-1954) [FLOWERS AND FORESTS.] Two posters. 1920. Each approximately 30x20 inches, 76x51 cm. The Dangerfield Printing Company Ltd., London. Conditions vary, generally B+ / A-. Paper. In addition to an ever-changing dynamic artistic style, Kauffer's signature took on many different forms during his earliest years as an artist. His first posters for Frank Pick "are signed in a way which loosely recalls Ludwig Hohlwein's signature . . . In Reigate [lot 111] . . . the signature is an orientalizing 'E. K.' enclosed in a box, much in the manner of a Japanese woodcut master's monogram" (Kauffer p. 16). This series for flowers (which constitutes six images in all) appears to be the only time in his graphic career in which he signed his name in a striated, separated manner. An indication that he was still searching for his final style.
